According to the CIA World Factbook, Saint Lucia is about 3.5 times the size of Washington, DC. The island, located in the Caribbean Sea, exports bananas and cocoa. Dominican Republic celebrates Independence Day. In 1844 the Haitians gave up control after dominating the country for 22 years. According to the CIA World Factbook, the Dominican Republic is about twice the size of New Hampshire. Located in the Caribbean Sea, both the Dominican Republic and Haiti occupy the island of Hispaniola. Over 10 million people live in the Dominican Republic, and Santo Domingo is the capital. Virgin Islands celebrate Transfer Day. The United States bought the Virgin Islands from Denmark in 1917 for $25 million. Dominica celebrates Independence Day. Great Britain granted Dominica its independence in 1978. This small (about four times the size of Washington, DC) Caribbean island is located between Guadeloupe and Martinique. Around 70,000 people live among the rainforests and volcanic mountains. Known for its variety of amazing animals and plants (including bananas), the island is home to the world’s second-largest hot spring, Boiling Lake. Roseau is the capital.
