He often used wood cuts for his illustrations, but he did work in other media. He received a Caldecott Honor Award in 1950 for <em>America&#8217;s Ethan Allen<\/em>, and he earned the 1953 Caldecott Medal for <em>The Biggest Bear<\/em>. He illustrated at least eight novels by other writers that earned Newbery Medals or Honor Awards. His unusual illustrations sparked interest in graphic novels. In 2011 the Lynd Ward Graphic Novel Prize was established.
