Lynd Kendall Ward<\/strong> (born Chicago, Illinois, 1905; died Reston, Virginia, June 28, 1985) created and illustrated books and wordless books. He often used wood cuts for his illustrations, but he did work in other media. He received a Caldecott Honor Award in 1950 for America’s Ethan Allen<\/em>, and he earned the 1953 Caldecott Medal for The Biggest Bear<\/em>. He illustrated at least eight novels by other writers that earned Newbery Medals or Honor Awards. His unusual illustrations sparked interest in graphic novels.
