He is most known for his illustrations of horses. He illustrated fifteen of Marguerite Henry&#8217;s books, including <em>Justin Morgan Had a Horse<\/em> and <em>Misty of Chincoteague<\/em>. He also illustrated John Steinbeck&#8217;s <em>The Red Pony<\/em> and Anna Sewell&#8217;s <em>Black Beauty<\/em>. He arranged the purchase of Alaska from Russia for $7,200,000. At the time many people called the deal \u201cSeward\u2019s Folly,\u201d but that purchase ended up to be more than remarkable.
