Before he was president, he had been a state senator for New York. He was assistant secretary of the navy, and he was governor of New York. He took over the presidency during the Great Depression. He was the only president to serve more than two terms. He died in office during his fourth term. After his death, Amendment Twenty-Two to the Constitution limited the number of presidential terms to two.
