Treaty of Accession was signed in Athens, Greece, in 2003. Ten more nations joined the European Union: Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Malta, Poland, Slovenia, and Slovakia. Today 27 countries are members of the European Union. Latvia celebrates Independence Day, the day in 1918 when the country declared its freedom from Soviet Russia. Slightly larger than the state of West Virginia, Latvia borders the Baltic Sea. Its neighbors include Lithuania and Estonia. Over two million people live in Latvia, and Riga is the capital. Older children could learn more about Latvia at: Latvia.

Union of Soviet Socialist Republics expired in 1991. Many portions of the Soviet Union broke away and formed their own countries. These countries included Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.
