Alaska became the forty-ninth state of the United States in 1959. Alaska is by far the largest state, but only two states have less population. Patty Murray became the first woman Senate President Pro Tempore in 2023. She is the most senior Democrat in the Senate. She presides over the Senate when Vice President Kamala Harris is not present. The Senate President Pro Tempore is third in line for the Presidency, after the Vice President and the Speaker of the House.
