Harry Atwood Taking Off from White House Lawn

Harry Atwood in 1911 landed his plane on the south lawn of the White House! President Taft presented him with a medal for his accomplishment. Later in the day Atwood turned his plane around and took off from the White House grounds.

  1. Harry N. Atwood was my wife’s (Jean Carol Russell Roughton) Uncle. He married her Aunt (Nellie Dow) which was his 5th wife. She died back in the late 2000’s in Covington, GA. They had one daughter who is still alive as far as I know. I have not called her in years/

Am glad you found my blog! What a wonderful connection you have to history! Do you have any mementos? Do you know what happened to the medal?
